Giant Panda free essay sample

The giant panda has been on the endangered species list since 1990. It is one of the species threatened to be wiped of the planet. Ironically, it’s one of the best known and loved species in the world. Giant pandas are endangered because a great deal of their habitat has been destroyed by humans . Forests are cleared for farmland so the giant panda is being forced into higher altitudes where there is less bamboo. As their habitat shrinks, they are in danger of starvation whenever the bamboo in their forests die. When habitats are more widespread, pandas can move more freely into other areas in which bamboo can still be found. The existence of farms, villages, and humans make that more difficult, if not impossible. Reduction of habitat means a reduction of the number of pandas that can be supported. Even though we are able to breed them in captivity and release them back into the wild, the more pandas in the wild would mean more competition for the limited living space and amount of food available. Shrinking habitat and shrinking population due to habitat loss is why they are endangered. Another reason pandas are endangered is because their digestive system is made to digest meat. As the pandas eat bamboo, their digestive systems are unable to digest and provide enough nutrition’s from the panda. Therefore, the giant panda needs to consume more bamboo shoots. However, this is difficult as the amount of remaining bamboo is low and not enough to feed them all. If giant pandas were to become extinct, it would affect the food chains. The extinction of the giant pandas would lead to the extinction of the pandas predators such as snow leopards, wolves and jackals as their prey has died out. It would also affect the prey of the snow leopards as they would be consuming more red pandas to make up for the loss of food. Also, as bamboo is eaten by giant pandas, it would become overgrown as nothing would eat it. Humans would also be restricted to other animals as they wouldn’t be able to consume the pandas. As the pandas extinction would lead to the extinction of other animals scientists would be unable to perform research on those animals. There are some advantages to the panda food chain if it were to become extinct. Firstly, there would be more bamboo for other bamboo eating animals. There would also be more food for the omnivores’ who eat bamboo as there would be more of it. There would be a growth in gorillas and red pandas as they would be eating the giant pandas food. The giant panda has become a Chinese icon and a global symbol of conservation, ever since the World Wildlife Fund used them for their. They have also come to symbolize the harsh reality of global biodiversity loss, especially in China. The giant panda is a type of bear. Its closest bear relative is the  Spectacled Bear  from South America. There is another type of creature that shares the giant pandas habitat and has many similar traits called the red panda but they are not related. Both have a similar  diet, eating mostly  bamboo. Most of the other species related to the giant panda do not exist anymore. Amilta Stephenboydz
